Dave and Ann Emerson’s Old Ways Days is a destination for New England farm, forest and work heritage at 418 Shaker Road in Canterbury, 1 1/4 miles North of Shaker Village.

At Old Ways Days is held the third weekend in October – so many opportunities for you and your kids to try things you’ve never done before. Have you ever wanted to try your hand at a blacksmith forge? Get the feel of traditional tools working wood? Make a spoon? All this and more await you at Old Ways Days where both adults and children can discover that they can actually do many things in the tried and true ways of our forbearers.

The wide variety of tools for Kids (and adults) will be available as always, including drills, planes, coping saws, spoke shaves, and lathes. Enjoy fine Old Time Bluegrass, Blues and Americana live music both days. Come hungry – for Dave’s famous chili plus hots and hams. Go home with some finely made work from the crafts people demonstrating.

The Emerson property, which is part of one of the oldest farms in Canterbury dates back to 1785, and was once part of the extended Canterbury Shaker Village. The protection of this property with Five Rivers Conservation Trust in 2003 by Dave Emerson in 2003 was the fulfillment of a long time family goal. This property abuts other former Shaker land that was protected by the neighbors in the 1980’s as part of the Land Conservation Investment Program.

The property includes several secluded scenic fields that have been grazed or have been in hay production for many years. Behind the fields the property is wooded with pocket wetlands and a small scenic brook that traverses the land. This area is a known wildlife travel corridor that has been popular with local hunters for generations.
