Fall Woods Walk at Ames Road Forest on Nov. 2 in Canterbury
November 2, 2025 – Five Rivers Conservation Trust welcomed a full group of walkers for a crisp fall afternoon exploring the beautifully managed Ames Road Forest in Canterbury. Former landowner and longtime forester Ned Therrien led the event, sharing stories from his decades of caring for the 117-acre property he and his wife, Jean, conserved with Five Rivers in 2013.
Participants enjoyed an easy walk through thriving forest and wetlands while hearing first-hand how thoughtful forest management supports wildlife habitat, addresses invasive species, and maintains the health and resilience of the land. One of the most memorable stops was the beaver pond, now flourishing due to Ned’s thoughtful stewardship of the surrounding forest. Attendees enjoyed a postcard-worthy moment as brilliant fall colors mirrored across the pond’s glassy surface.
The walk offered a rare opportunity to learn from a dedicated conservation leader whose career with the U.S. Forest Service and service on boards such as NH Audubon and the NH Timberland Owners Association have shaped forests across New Hampshire. Ned’s passion for stewardship, paired with the ongoing commitment of the current owners Alan Prince and Joe Lopez, made the day both educational and inspiring for all who attended. Attendees left inspired by Ned’s unwavering commitment to the land and the strong sense of place he embodies, a reminder that our love for the land is something we carry with us always.
We are grateful to Ned for guiding the walk and to the community members who joined us to experience this special Five Rivers-–conserved property.
